Implants are a permanent restorative option for teeth that are missing or have been extracted. They look and feel like natural teeth, and are the most permanent and efficient means of replacing lost teeth.

An implant is placed over a series of appointments because of the healing time required. Implants are titanium screws inserted through an incision in the gum. Over a period of 3-6 months, the jaw bone heals around the implant to become a solid, stable base for the new tooth. During this time a patient is fitted with a temporary crown, and a custom crown is created to match their smile perfectly.

After the jaw bone and gums have healed appropriately, the custom crown is placed in a second minor procedure. The doctor may need to expose the head of the implant by removing some gum tissue, and the crown is screwed to the top of the implant. When this is complete the tooth looks like part of the natural smile, and with proper care will last for decades!

To learn more about single-tooth implants and all the services we provide, visit www.evansdentalcare.com for more information. Patients struggling with sleep apnea should come see us at Evans Dental Care for evaluation. We can help patients find relief from sleep apnea, but quitting smoking is up to you!

Smoking causes upper airway inflammation, meaning the swelling causes the airway to narrow and disrupts the flow of air to the nasal passage and throat. This causes snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Cigarettes are highly addictive, and some smokers seek treatment for sleep apnea like a snore guard or CPAP machine, but continue to smoke. Smoking with sleep apnea not only puts more stress on the heart every day, but negates any treatment a sleep apnea patient is undergoing.

Habitual smokers may feel relaxed by one last cigarette for the day, but it actually creates more complications for restful sleep. Smokers can experience nicotine withdrawal overnight, causing more waking up and restlessness. Quitting smoking cold turkey is very difficult, but even lessening the amount of cigarettes or avoiding smoking at nighttime can help you achieve more restful sleep. Most smokers cannot quit on their own or on their first attempt, so don’t get discouraged!

To learn more about sleep apnea and the treatments we provide, visit www.evansdentalcare.com for more information. Foods that contain sugars of any kind can contribute to tooth decay and this might be a problem when it comes time to devour pumpkin pie and candied yams. Fortunately, at Evans Dental Care we have some foods to recommend so that you can have a tooth-friendly Thanksgiving.

For appetizers, put out plates of cheese and mixed nuts for guests to snack on while dinner is being prepared. Cheese is great for teeth because it contains strength-building calcium. Casein, a protein found in milk products, fortifies the surfaces of teeth to help prevent cavities. For the main course, green beans are often served as a side dish. This year, rinse your green beans in sesame oil. Rinsing with sesame oil in place of mouthwash has been shown to reduce the effects of plaque and even, in some cases, to reverse the effects of gingivitis.

If you have questions or concerns regarding oral care or dental hygiene, please give us a call. Mouth cancer refers to cancer that develops in any of the parts that make up the oral cavity. At Evans Dental Care, the goal of oral pathology is to diagnose and manage patients with salivary gland and mucosal diseases, diseases of the jaw bones, and head and neck pain syndromes where the primary treatment method is nonsurgical.

This facet of dentistry identifies and treats diseases that affect the mouth and maxillofacial region. Diagnosis can occur with microscopic, radiographic, biochemical and an in-office exam. An oral pathology also offers biopsy services for dentists and provides diagnoses based on those findings. During a biopsy, a tissue sample is removed to be tested. Some diseases that an oral pathology can diagnose include mouth and throat cancer, ulcers, mumps, infections, and salivary gland issues.

If you have questions or concerns regarding preventive dental care or oral cancer screening, please give us a call. Bridges can restore your smile, restore the ability to properly chew and speak, maintain the shape of your face, distribute the forces in your bite properly by replacing missing teeth and prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position. At Evans Dental Care, Dr. Peter S. Evans utilizes dental bridges to provide patients with the winning smile that they have always wanted.

A dental bridge is made up of two crowns one on each tooth on both sides of the gap -- these two anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth -- and a false tooth/teeth in between. These false teeth are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain or a combination of these materials. During the first visit for receiving a dental bridge, the abutment teeth are prepared. Preparation involves recontouring these teeth by removing a portion of enamel to allow room for a crown to be placed over them. During your second visit, the crown or bridge will be fitted into your mouth.

If you have questions or concerns regarding dental bridges, please give us a call. Enamel is the thin outer covering of the tooth and this tough shell is the hardest tissue in the human body. Your tooth enamel is constantly taking a beating for the things you eat and drink. Enamel is similar to bone in that once it's gone, this lost portion won’t grow back and Dr. Peter S. Evans, DDS, of Evans Dental Care, will recommend options to restore it.

Because enamel is not living tissue, it won’t naturally regenerate. Enamel can be strengthened, but once it’s gone, it’s gone for good. To repair tooth enamel if it’s chipped, cracked, or fractured, Dr. Evans may suggest dental bonding to restore the tooth back to its natural function. If enamel is weak, you can restore it to some degree by improving its mineral content. This can be done with toothpaste and mouthwashes designed for enamel repair.

If you have questions or concerns regarding preventive dental care or cosmetic dental services, please give us a call. A common treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure machine. CPAP machines are effective, but some patients find the mask uncomfortable or overwhelming. Continuous open airway therapy (COAT) devices work by aligning the jaw stabilizing the mouth to preserve the openness of the airway. This helps get maximum oxygen flow without a machine.

We are happy to recommend oral appliances for patients who will benefit from this treatment. These devices vary in size and design, but each style is meant to stabilize the jaw and control the tongue to keep the airway open. A consultation is the only way to find out which type of device is the best fit for you. Another perk of Invisalign clear aligners is that they require less maintenance and won’t prevent you from eating certain foods. Although you won’t have to make too many changes, there are still guidelines you should follow to wear and care for your aligners!

You should remove the aligners each time you eat, but if you do eat anything while wearing the aligners make sure to clean them thoroughly afterwards. It is also best to brush and floss your teeth before putting the aligners back in. Ideally when wearing clear aligners, you would only drink water. Colorful drinks can stain the aligners and too many hot drinks can eventually warp the plastic. If you do drink anything other than water while wearing the aligners you should rinse them with warm water afterwards.

Cleaning the clear aligners regularly is important for your teeth and straightening treatment. Clear aligners can become discolored over time without losing their effectiveness, but the color can show on your own teeth and continue to darken. There are several soaking solutions available over the counter, but brushing the aligners is also a sufficient cleaning option. Do not use toothpaste to brush the aligners because subtle abrasive properties of toothpaste could harm the aligner. It is best to use mild dish soap and a soft bristle brush to clean the aligners each time you brush your teeth.

To learn more about Invisalign and all the services we provide at our practice, visit www.evansdentalcare.com for more information. During a root canal a dentist removes any inflamed or infected tissue, and thoroughly cleans the root canal system. In about 90% of cases, the tooth heals and doesn’t require further treatment. When an infection won’t go away or the canals become re-infected after root canal treatment, our doctors can perform an apicoectomy.

An apicoectomy is also called a root-end resection and is performed to remove damaged tissue and seal a tooth’s root from any further infections. The procedure involves a small incision in the gums, followed by removal of any infected tissue and finally the end of the root tip itself. A root-end filling is placed there to act as a seal, preventing reinfection. The gum is sutured, and most patients only feel slight discomfort or swelling during healing. If you have a tooth infection lingering after a root canal gone wrong, please contact us to discuss your treatment options.

To learn more about the apicoectomy procedure and all the services provided at the practice, visit www.evansdentalcare.com for more information. In relation to dentistry, the definition of bonding is the application of a tooth-colored composite resin (plastic) to repair a decayed, chipped, fractured or discolored tooth. With the advancements in dental technology, Dr. Peter Evans DDS, of Evans Dental Care can apply dental bonding that may last for over 10 years with proper oral care.

Dental bonding is among the easiest and least expensive of cosmetic dental procedures and very little preparation is needed in advance for the treatment. Anesthesia isn’t necessary unless the bonding is being used to fill a decayed tooth. Dental bonding takes about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth to complete. Because bonding material can chip, it is important to avoid such habits as biting fingernails and chewing on pens, ice or other hard food objects. Tea, coffee, cigarette smoke, and other substances can stain the resin used in bonding.

If you have questions or concerns regarding dental bonding or cosmetic services, please give us a call. Evans Dental Care wants to make sure it never gets to that point for you and your family! When plaque builds up on a tooth, the gum starts to pull away from the tooth and form a pocket around the buildup, which only leads to more gum recession. A scaling and root planing procedure is used to treat this buildup and prevent the later stages of gum disease.

Scaling and root planning are two parts of a deep cleaning procedure your dentist can perform to help reverse the progress of gum disease. The procedure beings with scaling, which is the process of the dentist removing plaque from the surface of the teeth, all the way down to the gums. Root planing is the term for any minor contouring to smooth the surface of a tooth near the root. When plaque has been removed and the tooth root has been smoothed, the gums that have pulled away will have a clean, smooth surface to reattach to as they heal.

To learn more about deep periodontal cleaning and the other services we provide, visit www.evansdentalcare.com for more information. Dental implants have the ability to make a difference in your smile as well as boost your confidence. With advances in technology, our doctors at Evans Dental Care use implants to replace a single tooth or to replace an entire arch. In order to receive implants, you must have healthy gums and adequate bone structure to keep the implant in place.

The following are just a handful of benefits that make dental implants an investment worth considering:

Dental implants restore smile aesthetics

Boost confidence

Allow you to eat foods that are difficult or impossible with missing teeth or dentures

Allow you to follow your usual oral care routine

If you have questions or concerns regarding dental implants or restorative dental services, please give us a call. A child’s first dental visit should be scheduled between when the first baby tooth appears, and the child’s first birthday. Baby teeth eventually come out, but their growth and development is important for overall oral health for the child and the development of their adult teeth. Baby teeth should be brushed and cared for like adult teeth, and it’s important to monitor their growth and development.

Missing any tooth for too long can change the development of surrounding teeth and compromise the structure of the jaw bone, but regular checkups can keep a child’s tooth development right on track. Our dentists are skilled and experienced in administering dental care to children. If your child has seems nervous about seeing a dentist for the first time, we recommend going through a brushing routine with them at home, and talking about the dental visit before you arrive. Once we get your child’s oral health off to a great start, we offer a full range of services for child patients including dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants.

We love to see good oral hygiene habits formed early, and make lifetime patients out of kids from our community! With all of the coffee, wine, and foods that have the ability to stain our teeth on a daily basis, even proper maintenance sometimes leaves them a little lackluster. A tooth whitening is an excellent way to revive your smile and restore the natural color of your teeth or possibly make them whiter. At Evans Dental Care, we utilize a tray system that is designed to put the confidence back into your smile.

Teeth whitening trays are one of the many options available to whiten yellow teeth. At Evans Dental Care, this tray whitening system is completed in two steps. The first step is to make an impression of your teeth. With this impression, our doctors can produce custom whitening trays that can be used more than once. Finally, you will take the whitening gel and utilize it over a period of a few days.

If you have questions or concerns regarding teeth whitening or cosmetic dental services, please give us a call. They may be the first sign of decay. At Evans Dental Care in Williamsburg, we want our patients to be aware of when their body is signaling that it needs more help fighting incipient dental lesions, also known as white spots.

Acid is a by-product of bacteria eating food debris. It gets stuck in plaque, the sticky film covering teeth. As enamel is exposed to acid, it begins losing minerals. This causes it to look discolored and chalky in texture, as can also be seen in people with acid reflux. But while acid reflux mainly appears on the upper back teeth, erosion from decay can usually be found in places that are hard to brush, such as near the gum line and around orthodontic brackets.

White spots develop in as little as a month, but patients can halt their progress by improving their brushing. Teeth cannot regrow lost enamel mass, but they can remineralize. If a white spot does not disappear after the infection has been killed, we can discuss options such as masking it with a veneer.

Dr. Peter Evans operates Evans Dental Care at 103 Bulifants Blvd., Suite B, Williamsburg, Virginia, 23188. To spare our patients discomfort, we want them to be able to recognize when a filling needs to be replaced.

Fillings replace parts of the enamel that have been drilled away. While patients are numbed during the drilling, it is normal for them to feel tender for a few days afterward. But if the patient has difficulty closing their teeth together or the filling appears to be leaking, it needs to be reshaped as soon as possible.

The bonding that is used to cement fillings in place lasts for about ten years. After that, it cracks, providing bacteria with a place to feed and cause more decay. Patients should have old fillings replaced before this happens, but we also urge patients to get fillings replaced sooner if they are made of amalgam. This material contains mercury, and besides being unattractive, it is also unhealthy. Our office is equipped to remove mercury safely and replace it with white-colored resin. Food choices will depend on the amount of pain you experience and your ability to open your mouth. For those who suffer from minimal pain, a soft or easy chew diet will reduce symptoms. Our doctors at Evans Dental Care suggest incorporating these foods into your diet if you suffer from TMJ.

Soft foods give your jaw and temporomandibular joints the opportunity to rest and heal. Some excellent (and healthy) foods to eat include cooked vegetables and fruits, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, smoothies, soup, and yogurt. If you must eat food that requires a heavy amount of chewing, we recommended chopping it up into small pieces. If you have a sweet tooth, soft cakes, cobblers, and cheesecake are good things to choose from. Avoid foods that are crunchy, as they will aggravate the temporomandibular joint.

If you have questions or concerns regarding preventive dental care or TMJ/TMD, please give us a call. This joint allows us to move our jaw up and down, side to side, and lets us talk, chew, and yawn. Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) are a complex and poorly understood set of conditions characterized by pain in the jaw joint and surrounding tissues and limitation in jaw movements. Fortunately, relief is available. Here at Evans Dental Care, we can alleviate this condition.

Symptoms associated with the temporomandibular joint disorder, include pain in the facial muscles and jaw joints, ringing in the ears, facial swelling, and/or muscle spasms and lockjaw. If the pain is severe and doesn’t go away, our doctors may suggest a night guard to alleviate pressure on the jaw during sleep. They may also suggest applying a warm compress to the face to reduce inflammation, as well as stress reduction techniques to prevent teeth from grinding together.

If you have questions or concerns regarding preventive dental care or TMJ/TMD, please give us a call. In fact, studies show that 50 percent of adults have had bad breath or halitosis, at some point in their lives. It’s one thing to have a foul odor protruding from the mouth after eating a cup of coffee, smoking a cigarette, or eating a meal that is heavy in garlic or onions. Regardless of what is causing your bad breath, our doctors at Evans Dental Care can help you get the situation or stink, under control.

Bad breath can happen at any time of the day due to the large quantities of bacteria that are always present in the mouth. When we eat, the foods left in the mouth feed on these bacteria and result in a foul-smelling odor. Dry mouth, periodontal disease, and lifestyle factors such as smoking will also contribute to bad breath. You can combat these odors by brushing at least twice a day and cleaning between the teeth with floss after every meal. Regular dental checkups will help you prevent periodontal disease and dry mouth and stop these conditions before they become serious.

If you have questions or concerns regarding preventive dental care or bad breath, please give us a call. As a holistic practice, we pay close attention to how the mouth relates to the rest of the body. Sjögren’s Syndrome is one disorder which has repercussions for which patients will depend on an informed dentist’s help to manage.

Sjögren’s Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder that usually occurs in older women. It describes what happens when the immune system attacks the tear and saliva glands, along with the joints and skin. Besides being painful, it prevents the body from producing enough saliva, resulting in dry mouth. Without saliva, patients will also have more difficulty removing food debris from their mouths, increasing their risk of dental or gum infection.

It is unknown what causes Sjögren’s Syndrome. However, it is possible to manage dry mouth. Patients are advised to chew sugar-free gum and to use throat moisturizers. Diagnosing Sjögren’s Syndrome will require a sampling of the patient’s saliva glands. If the tests come back positive, we may be able to help patients obtain stronger medications for stimulating saliva production.

Dr. Peter Evans operates Evans Dental Care at 103 Bulifants Blvd., Suite B, Williamsburg, Virginia, 23188. In the face of the wide variety of products on the market today, we want to help our patients to make one of their biggest choices: whether to use an electric toothbrush.

An electric toothbrush is not cheap. Moreover, studies have shown that electric toothbrushes are not better than correct use of manual toothbrushes for preventing tooth decay and gingivitis. But correct use of a manual toothbrush requires it to be used for two full minutes per session and on every tooth surface. Some people have a lot of trouble doing this.

An electric toothbrush is obviously a less stressful option for people with motor neuron disorders or who otherwise have difficulty using their hands. Many electric toothbrushes also come with apps that inform the patient of which tooth surfaces they’re skipping over and whether they’re brushing too hard or for long enough. Some are also compatible with mobile device games for children that reward them for improving their brushing. Ultimately, it comes down to whether the price of the electric option is less than whatever cost a particular patient is likely to incur if they continue to be unable to use a manual toothbrush.

Dr. Peter Evans operates Evans Dental Care at 103 Bulifants Blvd., Suite B, Williamsburg, Virginia, 23188. Enamel is the thin outer covering of the tooth and has been deemed the hardest tissue in the human body. Enamel is strong, but it’s not invincible. Once enamel is destroyed by acidic foods and beverages, or by constant grinding of the teeth, it won’t return. Allow our doctors at Evans Dental Care to give you a lesson in enamel erosion.

When enamel on the teeth wears down, teeth may become hypersensitive. This means that you may find it more difficult to consume hot or cold foods and beverages because the dentin, which protects the teeth from these temperatures, has been reduced. Tooth sensitivity may occur both on the inner and outer surfaces of the teeth, so if you notice these changes, schedule an oral exam so that treatment options can be discussed.

If you have questions or concerns regarding preventive dental care or enamel erosion, please give us a call. Some fixes are recommended just to repair damage or just to whiten, but veneers are the best way to give your smile a total makeover. Veneers are thin ceramic shells that bond directly to the surface of your teeth. This gives you the opportunity to completely change the appearance of your smile and still look natural.

Patients with cosmetic issues like staining, cracked or chipped teeth, and even crooked teeth and small gaps can achieve a dazzling smile with veneers. We can make this happen in as little as two visits! First, your dentist will discuss the shape and look you want for your new smile. Then an impression of your teeth is taken in order to custom-fit the final product to the surfaces of your teeth. The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where your custom veneers will be fabricated, which may take up to two weeks. On your final visit, the veneers are bonded to your teeth for you to wear and enjoy!

To learn more about veneers and all the services we offer, visit www.evansdentalcare.com for more information. Athletes participating in any contact sport should wear some kind of mouth protection. A mouth guard helps prevent damage to the teeth and jaw, and also helps prevent injuries to the cheeks, tongue, and lips.

Sporting goods stores carry mouth guards, but they are generic in form and size. These mouth guards often end up feeling bulky and uncomfortable, leading to child and teenage athletes in particular not wearing the protection at all. A very ill-fitting mouth guard can even interrupt breathing and speaking. Custom mouth guards can be fit over braces and won’t interrupt normal activity, so visit Hallmark Dental for a custom mouth guard fitting. Get a mouth guard made of thin, hard plastic that protects your teeth and still fits comfortably. This is an easy precaution to take to protect your mouth, and you can go right back to playing your best!

To learn more about custom mouth guards and all the services we offer, visit www.evansdentalcare.com for more information. Our philosophy of personalized care ensures each patient’s dentures will be a good fit and will be supported as needed. But in order to prevent infection and further oral problems, patients need to understand how caring for dentures differs from normal oral hygiene.

Dentures need to be kept wet. When the patient removes them at night, the dentures should be placed in room temperature water. While there is nothing wrong with using a dissolvable product to clean them, the dentures should still be brushed each morning and night. This should be done by scrubbing them all over with a soft-bristled toothbrush. If patients have some remaining natural teeth, they may use separate toothbrushes, because dentures cannot be cleaned with ordinary toothpaste. Minerals in toothpaste which are beneficial to enamel can scratch plastic dentures. Patients should also brush their gums in the morning in order to restore blood flow and to clean in between any abutments of mini-implants they may have.

It is important to not put a denture in hot water, or else the plastic may bend and warp. If a denture does become misshapen, it should be only be repaired by professionals.

Dr. Peter Evans operates Evans Dental Care at 103 Bulifants Blvd., Suite B, Williamsburg, Virginia, 23188.
